It’s the day after the Snowdon Mountain race. There’s a large bruise on my foot from a nasty twist, my heels are painful, leg muscles are screaming and there’s a running vest burnt into my skin. So is it worth it? Oh yes…
Now in its 33rd year, the Snowdon race is known as one of the toughest mountain races in Europe and attracts several international teams. The 10 mile race starts in Llanberis and follows the main Llanberis path to the summit of Snowdon and returns on the same route.
This year the challenge of Snowdon was answered by two BvH, Stella and myself. The day started off cool, dry and overcast, ideal race conditions. But with a race start time of 2pm, the sun had time to burn away any cloud and it was hot hot hot…
After a short road section the start of the Snowdon path is a brutal climb. I managed to run the first few uphill miles but joined the others in walking and running when possible for the remainder of the climb. Reaching the summit is always a relief but this is where the real hard work starts. Downhill running is a skill only mastered by the brave.
After running out of steam on the descent last year I started downhill at an easier pace. But a few early stumbles, a twisted ankle and seeing a few other runners fall dented my confidence to descend quickly. I’m full of awe at the speed some runners can descend, seemingly oblivious to the risks.
The finish line is part of the Village Carnival and there’s great support from the crowds to keep you pushing for the final few hundred meters on the road.
I finished 7 minutes slower than last year but thoroughly enjoyed the race. Stella had a great run and knocked almost 4 minutes off her PB. Must be all that marathon running…
