A very pleasant 18 mile bike ride along the Welsh coast took me to the small village of Croesor, the HQ for the race.
The cloud base had lifted and the sun was shining on the summit of Cnicht, quite luckily really as I'd forgotten all about bringing a map, compass and whistle - doh! But thankfully the race organiser found me a map and compass, mandatory for any fell race.
The race itself is short at 4.5 miles but with 1850ft of climbing it's a grade AS fell race. The route starts with a steep climb before traversing the main ridge leading to the final tough climb to the summit. With all the recent rain the underfoot conditions were challenging with deep mud, standing water and plenty of slippery rocks and slate paths. The descent along the ridge was manic, high speed running whilst dodging and bounding over all manner of obstacles - what a rush!
I don't know my time or finishing position but then that's not really the point of fell racing - it's all about the physical challenge of running in the mountains. But I did manage to hold off a fell running legend who was celebrating his 60th Birthday!
