Stratford Triathlon 2007 - the view from the saddle
16 May 2007 20:33

The swim: 12 lengths 4 per lane of a 33 meter pool gets crowded at times, but Mark who started at about 8:24 got in and swam with almost perfect technique, with a breath on every third stroke completing in 8 min 11 sec,

Glyn went in the water at 9.40 and straight away swam good technique breath hold every 5 strokes. But unlike the diciplined Mark went off too fast, passed lots and lots of swimmers but by the time of finishing, realised he had swam 14 lengths not 12 losing any advantage in position and time.

The bicycle: Mark proved that to improve you have to train, and he did what was a stunning performance. 48 min is brilliant - almost in Gary Mason's league.

Must have averaged 20 mile / hour or more. Well done.

Glyn on the other hand could not get started in the transition Mark who had finished shouted just get on with it. Eventually setting off and dropping my cycle shoes!  And almost falling at the start.

Looked for a friendly face at the bridge but a cyclist passed me not willing to give up a position chased after him, did catch and pass him but only because he had a puncture.   Glyn had cramp between 4 and 6 miles so had to drop down a gear and spin and stretch on the bicycle until the calf cramp eased off and the sprint to catch up again, but finished in a respectable 54 minutes.

The run: I do not think Mark stopped smiling he ran a well controlled steady event over a cross country muddy course 22 min for 5K after 3 disciplines is something to be proud of.

Glyn who had run in the masters relay the day before had legs like jelly and now ran a slow but enjoyable run who must have talked to every one on the rout.

Great fun.

A great day and look forward to the next.

The first time Mark and I did this event I slapped him on the arse as I cycled past him on the bikes.  After Sunday he proved that not only is he better than me now he whipped my butt.
